March 8th is International Women’s Day. Since 1911, this date has celebrated the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. Multilingual Connections is a woman-owned and woman-led company, and while we firmly believe that women’s achievements should be celebrated 365 days a year, we embrace this occasion to bring attention to the remarkable women in our lives and around the world and to all that these women have accomplished—all too often in the face of great odds and obstacles.

The reality, however, is that along with all the achievements, progress, and heroes to be celebrated on this date, there is also much to mourn, to reject, and to stand against.

In Mexico, a country where multiple MLC team members and several of our linguist partners reside, the 8th of March, or “8M,” is a day for women to make their voices heard and their presence known as they come together to reject femicide, gender violence, and attempts to control bodily autonomy. On Tuesday, one of our Mexico-based team members attended the 8M march in Oaxaca, Oaxaca. Here are some photos that she captured:

Violence against women is a global phenomenon. In Mexico, however, the numbers are both heartbreaking and frightening. In the first month of 2022 alone, 14 femicides were registered in Mexico— with the majority of the victims being under 18 years old. Across the country, women took over the streets on Tuesday to “go out and revindicate our right to a life free of violence and to make decisions about our own bodies.”

We stand in solidarity with not only the women of Mexico but all women across the world who are confronting violence and unjust and inequitable systems. As a language services company, nuance and meaning are at the heart of what we do.

Saying no to violence against women is one message that must come through loud and clear in any country, in any context.
