Mark your calendars! Just last month, the United Nations Department for General Assembly & Conference Management gave its stamp of approval for declaring September 30th International Translation Day. Their announcement came on the heels of a draft resolution titled “The role of professional translation in connection with nations and fostering peace, understanding and development.” The resolution affirms the critical role that translation plays in supporting the principles of the UN Charter, especially in the areas of peacekeeping and sustainable development.
Though its UN is new, International Translation Day has been celebrated on the 30th of September since the formation of FIT (International Federation of Translators) in 1953. The day was chosen as it is the feast day of St. Jerome, the patron saint of translators and interpreters throughout the world. FIT has announced that the 2017 edition of International Translation Day will feature the theme “Translation and Diversity.”
The main sponsor of the UN resolution was the Foreign Ministry of Belarus. Andrei Dapkiunas, the Permanent Representative of Belarus to the United Nations, said during his presentation “This resolution is about the underappreciated role of language in the life of our human society.”
