At Multilingual Connections, we work with talented linguists from across the globe who are experts in translation, transcription, and/or multimedia localization. Our linguists also have industry knowledge and experience – some have spent years doing legal and law enforcement transcription, while others were subtitling movies, and more. We leverage our linguists’ expertise and pair each project with the best linguist for the job, taking into consideration their native language, region, and their area(s) of expertise.

To recognize their outstanding work, we select and award one “Linguist of the Month” based on their exceptional quality, their reliability, and their general amazingness. This month, we are excited to feature MLC’s October Linguist of the Month, Alexis. Since joining the MLC team, she has done an outstanding job as an English<>Spanish translator and transcriptionist. In addition to years of professional experience, Alexis brings expertise in medical translation and interpretation, as well. In her time off work, she is a mother who loves to spend time with her family and to travel. And here is a little more about Alexis:

Alexis Linguist of the Month

Where are you from? Where do you live?

I’m originally from Mexico City but I’ve been living in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico for the past 8 years.

Besides English, what languages do you speak and/or translate?

I speak English and Spanish fluently but would love to learn Italian or German.

Why and how did you become a translator?

I worked in the hotel industry for many years, but when I became a mother I realized I needed more time for my daughter, so it was time to switch careers! I found a path as an over-the-phone interpreter working from home, it helped me take care of my daughter and besides that, I discovered it was something I actually enjoyed doing. Later, I worked as a translator for a pharmaceutical company and years after I had the opportunity to join the Multilingual Connections team as a translator/transcriptionist.

What is something you love about translation?

What I like the most about my job is that I get to be someone else’s voice. It’s a big commitment but I like to be able to express what people can’t because of a language barrier. I love to learn something new with every project, either a word or a phrase, every job gives you the chance to grow!

What do you like to do outside of work?

I love the beach, looking at the ocean, swimming, etc. Traveling to different beach destinations is what I love doing the most, and I try to do it as much as I can. I also enjoy spending time with my daughter, we bake treats sometimes, read books and watch movies together. Family is very important to me.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?

Considering that I love going to beach destinations, I wish I could travel to the Maldives. I think it’s paradise and I would absolutely enjoy it.

What is your motto or personal mantra?

At work and in life: Whenever you are asked if you can do a job, tell ’em, “Certainly I can!” Then get busy and find out how to do it. – Theodore Roosevelt.

With this motto, you can certainly do anything! We thank Alexis for being such a great part of our linguist team, and stay tuned for more behind the scenes updates from Multilingual Connections!
