Jill Bishop, PhD – Founder & CEO
Jill Bishop founded Workforce Language Services in 2005, and rebranded in 2012 as Multilingual Connections. She received a Bachelor’s degree in Spanish Education from the University of Illinois and her MA/PhD in Linguistic Anthropology from UCLA. Dr. Bishop lived in Barcelona during college, where she fell in love with Judeo-Spanish and wrote her doctoral dissertation on it — partly in homage to her Yiddish-speaking grandparents. When she’s not working, she’s spending time with her husband and 5th grade son in Evanston, just north of Chicago.
Mark Bishop, MBA – Chief Operating Officer
Mark joined Multilingual Connections after a 20-year career in nonprofit management. Mark received his Bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Michigan and MBA from University of Missouri. Mark has lived in Southeast Asia and the Middle East, where he taught English and studied language. When not working, Mark enjoys spending time with his family – in particular, trying out new recipes with his 5th grade son and playing a lot of catch. A few times a year he can be found covered in mud and running obstacle races.
Seyma Albarino – Vendor Manager
Seyma, a New York native, first moved to Chicago to study at Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism. After college, she spent a year in Jerusalem, eventually returning to the United States to work in non-profits. She most recently worked as a French<>English medical interpreter; her linguistic repertoire also includes Russian and Serbian. Seyma has tangoed in three countries, and she enjoys learning to play guitar, sketching and exploring nature.
Katie Baumann – Team Lead
Katie grew up in Chicago and graduated from Carthage College in Wisconsin with a B.A. in Spanish. She spent a semester abroad in Alicante, Spain and a month in Santiago, Chile on an independent study trip. Not long after graduating, Katie moved to Chile and ended up staying for five years. She worked managing a language institute and as a freelance Spanish to English translator, while also traveling, playing soccer and getting to know the country. Katie’s happy to be back in her hometown and using her language skills at Multilingual. Outside of work, Katie reads, plays soccer, does gymnastics and sails on Lake Michigan in the summer.
Raudel Caldera – Senior Project Manager
Raudel grew up in a bilingual Spanish/English household in the northwest suburbs of Chicago. His interest in foreign languages began in high school when he started taking classes in Italian and French. Raudel completed a B.A. in International Studies at Roosevelt University in Chicago and has held a variety of positions in Internet marketing, education and translation project management. He has a strong background in managing technical translation projects and those related to web and digital media translations. Outside of work, Raudel likes to spend time with his family and enjoys all that the City of Chicago has to offer.
Kara Davis – Team Lead & Contracts Manager
A transplant from Louisville, Kentucky, Kara moved to Chicago in 2015 to pursue her passion for international communication at Multilingual Connections. She graduated with a B.A. in Spanish & Journalism from New York University and received an M.A. in International & Intercultural Communication from the University of Denver. Throughout her career, Kara has spent time living abroad in Argentina, England and India and has supported a variety of corporate and nonprofit entities serving the global community. Outside of work, she enjoys volunteering, traveling, learning new languages, spending time with her family and friends – and now exploring the city of Chicago!
Osvaldo de la Torre – Editor
Osvaldo was born in Los Angeles and grew up in Mexico. He moved back to the United States as a teenager and went on to study English in college. He decided to keep pursuing his interest in languages and cultures and went on to obtain an MA at the University of Notre Dame and a PhD at Cornell University, both in Hispanic Studies. As a graduate student and later as a full-time academic, Osvaldo had the opportunity to teach language, literature, and culture courses related to Latin America. After his time in academia, Osvaldo became a translator and interpreter in the Chicago area. He is happy to be now part of Multilingual Connections, working alongside people who share a passion for communication and culture. In his free time Osvaldo enjoys reading, writing, creative translation, and watching soccer.
Elizabeth Dumitrescu – Senior Project Manager
Elizabeth grew up in Chicago, and graduated from the University of Southern California with a BA in Spanish. In college, she spent a year abroad in Madrid, Spain and loved it so much that she moved back after graduation. After several years there, Elizabeth moved back to Chicago where she got her Advanced Professional Certificate in Translation Studies from the University of Chicago. She’s worked as a translator, interpreter, ESL teacher, and translation project manager. Elizabeth loves multilingual and multicultural environments — in her household you can hear English, Spanish, and Romanian. In her spare time, Elizabeth loves watching movies, listening to music, and sewing.
Phillip Garland – Project Manager
Phillip grew up in Tennessee and studied English in college. With an interest in fiction writing and comparative literature, he obtained an MFA in Creative Writing at the University of Kansas. He moved to Chicago in 2014. Throughout his career, he has worked as an ESL teacher, a legal writer, and a university-level instructor. He has a strong background in education and immigration law, and in his free time he enjoys writing book reviews, bicycling, and playing with his three (yes, three) cats.
Mariela Golan – Senior Project Manager
Mariela grew up in Buenos Aires, Argentina. After a year and a half of law school, she realized languages were her real passion, and she earned her degree in Spanish-English Legal Translation at Universidad del Museo Social Argentino. Mariela worked as an ESL teacher until she got a position translating, proofreading and subtitling television and film scripts for Latin American TV stations and production companies. She moved to Chicago after meeting her future husband on vacation in the US, and she really enjoys having the opportunity to use her language skills in the multicultural environment Multilingual Connections offers.
Laura Monge – Translator
Laura grew up in Barcelona, Spain. She completed part of her bachelor at King’s College London and graduated with a B.A. in Translation and Interpretation from Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona. She has a strong background in subtitling and translation in the areas of law, economics, advertising, marketing, technology, user interface and audiovisual media. She is very happy to be now part of Multilingual Connections; she loves living abroad and overcoming new professional and personal challenges. Outside of work, she loves dancing and working out — and now exploring what the city of Chicago has to offer.
Akif Taşkent – Associate Project Manager
Akif was born in Adana, a city in southern part of Turkey, and moved to Istanbul with his family at age three. Having grown up in a multicultural environment (his grandparents migrated from Uzbekistan in 1945) and in the diverse city of Istanbul, he began studying foreign language in high school. Akif continued exploring this passion in college and graduated with a degree in English Translation and Interpretation at Istanbul University. Akif has several years of experience in translation project management and joins the Multilingual Connections team as its first Turkish employee. In his spare time he likes to work out, watch documentaries, and dream about being a race car driver.
Meredith Veto – Translator
Meredith grew up in Greensboro, North Carolina, and now lives in Guadalajara, Mexico. She studied Spanish at Guilford College and received her Spanish-to-English Translation professional certification from New York University. She specializes in legal and commercial texts of all types. In her spare time, Meredith plays the piano, explores little pueblos outside of town, and enjoys regional specialties like tortas ahogadas and pozole.
